Plants

Savanna biomes are usually very hot, so the plants that live there have to have certain qualities to be able to survive through the climate; especially because it has so little rainfall per year.

Main Adaptations

  • Trees have longer roots so that they can extract water from deeper in the ground.
  • They have fewer leaves so that less moisture is lost through the process of evaporation.
  • The leaves are also very small, to reduce moisture lost.
  • They lose their leaves during the dry season to keep and conserve more moisture.
  • All of the plants (grass, bushes etc.) and trees (Acacia and Baobab) adapt to help store more water for a longer period of time
  • Baobab trees have thick trunks so that they can store 120,000litres of water. It does this so it can feed itself during the dry season.
